Lovingly she looked at me
but I wasn't there.

Gently she held me in her arms
but I wasn't there.

Softly she caressed me
but I wasn't there.

Kissed me and loved me
but still I wasn't there.

Who then was it, that was
another in my place---
and all the time I was there.

But then that's never happened
to you---or has it.
