DEATH

From time immemorial

Has man tried to define

Why we must live and

Why we must die.

We know we must die

When we know we live

For all that is alive

Eventually dies.

This is how it has been

This is how it will be

For all recorded time.

It is how we die,

What we think and

What we do that

Matters most to us.

How is it determined

That one lives,

That one dies.

Coincidence, probability,

Random statistical choice,

Or a note in the

Book of Life above,

I leave that choice up to you.

Who dies how,

Early or late,

Peacefully or

By violence,

In great agitation

Or in serene bliss,

With long suffering

Or in their sleep.

That determination

Once again assigned,

Through random choice

Or careful predetermination

For each and everyone of us.

What deep mystery

Lies beyond our mortal life,

Is it all over with everything

When one dies.

This question asked

From prehistoric times

Has no proven answer

Save to say, that the thought

Of immortality is indeed a

Choice in each person's mind.

So then to embrace

The inevitable

When the time comes,

Or fight to the last breath

To cling to life and

Hope to ward off death,

The choice may or may not

Be yours to make.

But one fact is sure

No mortal has

As yet lived on forever.
