OUR CONSCIENCE

We weigh that which we must,
Face each matter personal to us
Alone, all alone we must decide
Which course to choose
Which path to take
What is just, what is right
What is wrong to lead us astray;
Just what it is we must do
To find the answer within us true
The answer we must live with
From now on forth as of this day.

Decisions that affect our lives
Reflect upon the ones we love
Change, alter our direction
For all that are involved with us.
What if we err in our best judgment
Will our conscience be our guide,
Regret and sorrow follow us
Or happiness and joy survive.

Our conscience, culmination
Of our past combined experience,
Of all that we are, All that we have come to be;
Our conscious and sub conscious mind
Merged into one, melded, molded,
Making us, shaping us
Providing insight to our inner self, thus
Allowing decisions of conscience to be made.

Now then the time has come
When through a set
Of particular circumstance
A conscious decision must be made
Affecting our lives in a most concrete way.
The dye is cast, we can no longer delay,
We panic, torture ourselves, we pray,
Search our souls, our hearts, our minds
Until in the final end
We call upon our conscience
To say what it is we must do,
What it is we must weigh,
How we must decide.

There is no easy
Nor perfect answer
On any given time or day.
Only a fool without much concern
Would lightly give his conscience away.
Most others, after much serious thought
Would with heavy heart
Vote this way or that
Knowing full well
No matter what the choice
Their lives will never be the same again.
