Some find it hard
to accept that which is
or that which is about to be -
a change in one's health, wealth,
means of earning an income, status,
their personal or family relationship,
occurrences that either in single measure
or devastating combination
can redirect our lives, our fortunes,
effect our egos, our psyches
make mockeries of well laid plans
test our mettle, fortitude, perseverance
shake us to our very foundation.

The strains, trials and tribulations
resulting from such emotional,
psychological, physical upheaval,
too great for some minds to bear,
cause many to seek safety, refuge,
  shielding these events from their mind
using techniques well known to others,
obfuscating the facts, blaming another
or, in severe instances, self denial,
the most dangerous form of them all.
