A FINE DAY

Warm and balmy was the day
When hand in hand we strolled
A cool breeze graced our face
It was a happy summer day.

We sat on a nearby bench
In the shade of an oak tree
We did not talk a lot, just
Enjoyed each other’s company.

After a while she smiled
Looked lovingly at me
Sighed took a deep breath, asked
“Would you keep my heart for me?”

Stunned, elated, ecstatic
I happily tenderly replied
“I will cherish your heart,
Keep it safe from harm
Treat it with respect, kindness
As long as there is breath within me.”
